Raven,
whose grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee from Eastern Tennessee had
taught him many things regarding the traditions of her people.
Through childhood till her death when he was in his early
twenties she had passed on her skills in 'Wild
Crafting' and her
love of Traditional Storytelling. In
the early 70’s he got tired of the misinformation about his ancestors
that appeared in print, motion pictures and television and decided to do
something about it. He
started talking to all that would listen as he explained the 'truth'
about the Indian People. Over
the years this grew into what is now known as 'Cherokee
Way'.
From its start Mary (a non-Indian) supported him and shared his
interest and enthusiasm in educating the public in this project.
But that’s not surprising as she’s worked with Raven and
supported him in all his endeavors from the time they met. In
1995 when they moved to Vance County in North Carolina they formally set
up the business 'Cherokee
Way' to teach
the Indian Traditions and History to the public.
Now living in 'Cherokee
Country' they were (and are) well
received and accepted,
and are in constant demand as Teachers/Educators.
The venues they work are varied --- from in the schools with
their
'Native American Storyteller – Stories
of the People'
(where, at times some magic may occur)
program in the Spring each year to the
'Indian Heritage' programs in
the Fall they are certainly
kept busy. In
addition they appear at various functions in the Piedmont Area from
Libraries, Service Clubs to State and County Sites.
All in all they are greatly in demand and well known and received
by the general public. Presently
they are working in the Community Colleges and the County Of Vance with
Cultural Diversity programs such
as 'Indians Of The Carolinas'
for
the general public. Additionally,
in 1998 Raven got annoyed with people asking if Indian People were
Christians and if they believed in God.
(His Paternal Grandmother had been Baptized in the Methodist
Church in Tennessee in the 1870’s) so he formed 'Native American
Ministries'. Here they work
in the churches in North Carolina teaching And,
that is my story...... Sadly, Raven unexpectedly died on the 3rd.November, 2005.
