Gene's health continued to deteriorate.  Diabetes came along. Instead of requesting "Chocolate Chip Cookies, no nuts," which was his continuing demand  (He dubbed himself leader of the Church of The Chocolate Chip Cookie) his request became for "Sugarless Chocolate Chip Cookies."  I wonder how many readers suspected why?

His cholesterol soared despite his diet, which he was faithful to.  His blood pressure elevated and his red blood cell count fell.  His trips to the doctors became more frequent.  Yet his sense of humor never left him.  He bragged about how brave he was during these operations and how he always "patted the nurse on her fanny."  But, in truth, his health was going down hill and he knew it.

Finally his doctor put him in the hospital because he required a pacemaker. Sadly, while there, many other problems were discovered and the pacemaker was never installed because his rapidly deterioration would not allow the operation.  He developed pneumonia, a foot infection which was to require an amputation, and finally congestive heart failure.

Eugene Jerome Poinc, who regularly signed his name as "From Another Planet Poinc,"  left this Earth and return to his home planet on July 23, 2002 at the age of 73.

BUT...
My pal Gene would not want me to stop here.  He loved life and would not want to be remembered as a frail old man who died so sadly.  He would ask you to look at his legacy and laugh and know how much fun he had in his life.  He would tell you his favorite creations were Madame Grodznoya and the "twins."  So, for those of you reading this who knew them, let me tell you a few quick secrets about them.

MADAME GRODZNOYA.

The "Spirrot Medium" who was able to "speek to ded peeple" was based on a real person in Gene's life.  Her name was Regan and she was a model/actress whom Gene adored. Click on any of the Thumbnail pictures below to see a larger version.

For those who recall, on the Shadow Net, I claimed to have stolen Madame Grodznoya from Gene and taken her to Boston.  Gene was furious and claimed I had her twin sister. His "west coast" friends came to his defense and my "west coast" friends to mine.  There was lots of name calling, insults, yelling and hollering... all in good fun.  In truth, Gene and I would talk for an hour or more every Sunday evening on the phone and plot what we, and Grodznoya, would "do" the coming week.  When a lurker would join in, thinking it was for real, Gene and I were delighted.  The Shadow Network, after all, is for story telling and that is just what we were doing.
