Alexandra Wallace,
a.k.a. The Queen of Hearts.

Alexandra Wallace (Alex) a.k.a “The Queen of Hearts” lives in Edinburgh, Scotland (UK). She is not a performer of magic but has a very special place in the promotion & history of our craft and the hearts of those who have met her in connection with magic, especially bizarre magick.

She became interested in bizarre magick when she got in tow with Charles W. Cameron in 1996!  They shared many mutual interests, friends and happy times together and the light went out of her life when he died on Sunday, 7 January 2001.

An only daughter, Alex was born on 7 June 1949, her father served in the Royal Air Force during World War II who, after demob, went on to become a shopkeeper in London, then a farmer and latterly a property manager.  Her mother served as a nurse in London during the Blitz and after the War she became a housewife to concentrate on family life.  However, the marriage broke down after 20 years, the hoped for family life disintegrated, so both parents split up and went their separate ways.

After leaving school and college Alex had a chequered career in retail, book publishing, journalism, the police, politics and currently local government.  She is also a freelance writer/photographer contributing to various newspapers and periodicals over the years.

She has done voluntary work for Solidarity in Poland, St. Columba’s Hospice, Edinburgh and Leith Diplomatic Corps, Scottish Council for Minorities’ Rights, Masonic Order, Royal British Legion (Scotland), Past Master of a Rosicrucian Lodge, Friends of Israel (cultural association), Chessel’s Court Area Association and Neighbourhood Watch.

Her interests include Scottish Country Dancing, International Dancing, Philosophy, Discussion and Debate, Cooking, Reading, Walking and Music (balalaika in particular) – thanks to Charles Cameron who taught her to play chess she now lists chess and magic as additional interests!

It was while Alex was the Edinburgh Branch Co-ordinator of the Scottish Society for Psychical Research that she first met Charles Cameron in 1995. He had been a psychic investigator for over 50 years and, together, they often investigated cases in Edinburgh and its environs and regularly travelled through to Glasgow for executive committee meetings of the Society.  Alex got to know many of Charles’ friends from the bizarre magick field and other friends from the Edinburgh Magic Circle and business – not to mention witches across the country.

Alex used to accompany Charles to some of his shows and, on occasion, acted as his assistant.  Compared with her background and interests, his was a totally bewitching and magical world of which she knew nothing, but which became an integral part of her life and she reveled in it.  She needed some magic in her life to give it balance!

The regular Gatherings which were held in Edinburgh were really memorable – when Charles held court as the Godfather of Bizarre Magick and everyone had a ball. During these events, Alex worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure everyone was well fed and watered, the hospitality along with her presence has become legend.

Now that Charles has passed on to the Great Sugar Candy Mountain, Alex continues to be the link in Edinburgh and she now happily carries the torch and is one of the main local organizers of The Gathering.  Her Royal Mile apartment in the Old Town of Edinburgh, with its mementos and memorabilia, is still the focal point for this event and bizarrists, as well as conventional magicians, can always be assured of a warm welcome as the legend continues.
